Appendix B: Sample Presentation Outlines

How alcohol affects the human body

  1. We live in a multicultural country; our audience in this class is proof of that. Even though some of you were born here, we represent different cultures and traditions.  I was born in a country which does not exist anymore – the Soviet Union.  Twenty-four years ago it broke down to several independent countries, including the Ukraine.  My homeland is beautiful and rich in history.  But nowadays it faces a few major issues; one of them is a decline in its population.  According to the statistics, Ukraine’s mortality rate is the second highest in the world.  There are many contributing factors; one of them is extensive alcoholism.  That is why during the past few decades many Ukrainian and Russian scientists have conducted research on the impact alcohol has on the human body.  As all of us students love to party, it will be interesting to know what they have found out about alcohol.
  2. You can make a healthier choice to reduce or completely avoid alcohol drinks by learning what process takes place in the human body after alcohol consumption

III.       You will discover what happens to human blood, to major internal organs and to the reproductive system after alcohol intake.

  1. When alcohol, which is a solvent, gets into a human blood stream, it interacts with red blood cells and degreases them
  2. Cells stick together and form clots
  3. dehydration

Alcohol molecules are so small they can easily go through cell walls and with a blood stream reach your brain within one minute after a first swallow.

  1. Several thousands of brain cells die instantly after consuming 100 ml of hard liquor
  2. damage to the brain
  3. high blood pressure and heart attack
  4. harm to digestive system

Alcohol’s ability to interfere in a process of digestion may cause you to feel sick, but the worst thing happens when it reaches a reproductive system.

  • There is a significant difference in how alcohol impacts male and female reproductive organs.
  • effects on male reproductive systems
  • effects on female reproductive systems

4. These are some of the negative changes alcohol makes on our body on a physiological level. It poisons blood, and through the blood stream harms our internal organs and systems.  What is even worse, it can damage our gene cells, which leads to infertility or to the birth of sick children.

5. All the negative consequences may not occur after a single drink, but they rather have an accumulative effect on the human body. A habit of drinking alcohol is difficult to overcome, but it can lead to deterioration of human health, to fertility problems, and to broken families.  Even though it is a personal decision to drink alcohol or not, knowing more information on how it affects our bodies can help us make wiser decisions.
