Part 1: Developing Competence

Note Cards

Once you have completed the formal outline, you can transfer the information to your note cards as shown below.  Use no more than six 3 x 5 or 4 x 6 note cards and write on one side only.  Use white cards, as white is a neutral color that attracts the least amount of attention.  You may want to number the cards in the upper right-hand corner to help you keep them in order.

As an example, here is a set of note cards (not in actual size) for the Bipolar Disorder presentation.

1.

I.  a few key words from the introduction …

II.  Once you are familiar with the differences between the two types of Bipolar Disorder, you will have a better understanding of what a person with this Disorder is faced with.

III.  To create this familiarity, we will look at a definition of Bipolar Disorder, the differences between the two types of the Disorder, and the harmful effects of this mental health issue.

2.

A. A better understanding of Bipolar Disorder starts with its definition.

  1.             definition
  2.             symptoms of mania
  3.             symptoms of depression (NIMH)

While the definition explains Bipolar Disorder in general, further distinctions must be made.

3.

B.  There are key differences between the two types of the disorder.

  1.             depressive episodes
  2.             lower cap on mania
  3.             less “well time”

Now that we know the differences between the two types, we can better understand the different consequences to watch for.

4.

C.  Having severe episodes of depression can sometimes lead to serious consequences.

  1.             quote from Dr. Insel
  2.             rate of effects of both types
  3.             importance

5.

IV.  Bipolar Disorder can be managed if you have a clear definition of the disease, understanding the difference between the two types of Bipolar Disorder, and being aware of the possible consequences

V.  In addition to the information provided here, you may benefit from reading more about Bipolar Disorder.  Who knows, you may be the one to help a friend or yourself get help and not go through the years of confusion that I experienced.
